The first dance is one of the most personal moments at a wedding. It is also one of the moments many couples dread. It does not have to be. With a little preparation, it becomes a moment you will never forget.
It starts with the music choice. Choose a song that suits you — not what is popular, but what has meaning. It does not have to be a waltz. We have played first dances to everything from Ed Sheeran to Fleetwood Mac, from Andre Hazes to a custom mashup of three songs.
If the song is too long, we shorten it. Most first dances last 2 to 3 minutes — long enough to feel the moment, short enough to hold attention. We can also edit the track: a calm start that transitions into an uptempo section where guests join the dance floor.
The production makes the difference. During the first dance, we dim the venue lighting and set a spotlight on the couple. Warm colours, soft beam — no harsh disco lights. The lighting follows the moment: calm at the start, more intense as the energy builds. This is included as standard in our wedding packages.
A popular variation is the surprise switch. The couple starts with a calm track and halfway through, the DJ switches to an uptempo hit. That surprise element always works — guests jump up and the party begins.
Whatever you choose: practise at home a few times. It does not have to be choreographed. Just move slowly, look at each other, enjoy the moment. We handle the rest.
We always discuss the first dance in detail during the initial meeting. Which song, which moment, how long, who can join in. Everything is documented in the run sheet, so it goes perfectly on the day itself. Read more about our approach to weddings or get in touch to discuss your wishes.
