DJ Agency vs. Solo DJ vs. Collective: Which Is Right for You?

The three options for booking a DJ compared. Pros, cons and who each option is best suited for.

You want to book a DJ. You search online and you see three types of providers: solo DJs, DJ agencies and DJ collectives. Which one suits your event? In this article, we lay out the differences clearly — including pros and cons.

The solo DJ handles everything themselves: communication, preparation, setup, performing and breakdown. The advantages are personal contact and often the sharpest price. You know exactly who you're getting. The downsides: everything depends on one person. If they fall ill, you have no backup. The DJ has to play music, control the lighting and monitor the sound all at once — and that affects quality as the event gets bigger. Suitable for: smaller parties up to around 80 guests, informal events, budget-conscious bookings.

A DJ agency is a middleman that matches available DJs to events. You book through the agency and they arrange the match. The advantage is wide availability — they sometimes have dozens of DJs on their books. The downside is distance. The DJ you saw on the website isn't necessarily the one who shows up at your event. The consultation goes through the agency, not directly with the DJ. Suitable for: events where you need someone quickly, larger organisations that book DJs regularly.

A DJ collective is a permanent team that works as a unit. At Last Night Group, the DJ you speak to is the same one who performs at your event. But they don't work alone: there's a sound technician, a lighting technician and for larger events a stage manager. The advantage is personal contact and a professional crew. Everything is documented in a single run sheet. If someone falls ill, a colleague takes over who follows the same approach. The downside is that the price is higher than a solo DJ. Suitable for: weddings, corporate events, events where lighting and sound matter.

What suits you? Ask yourself three questions. How many guests are you expecting? With fewer than 80 guests, a solo DJ can work perfectly well. With 100+ guests, you'll notice the difference a team makes. How important is mood lighting? If lighting is an afterthought, a solo DJ will do. If you want the venue to look completely different from how it does during the day, you need a lighting plan. What's your risk tolerance? For a one-off event like a wedding, you don't want to take chances. A collective offers the most certainty.

Why we never play a playlist

A playlist is a list. A set is a conversation with the room. That is the difference.

The build-up of an evening that truly works

Going from dinner atmosphere to full capacity is not a coincidence. It is a carefully constructed story.
